The Illinois Environmental Health Association is committed to promoting and maintaining professional licensure for Environmental Health professionals in Illinois. To that end, IEHA conducts a number of activities to support licensed professionals in Illinois. IEHA is a licensed provider of continuing education units (CEUs) and all of the educational events it sponsors provide authorized CEUs. In addition, IEHA tracks and takes positions on legislation in the Illinois General Assembly that affects licensure of Environmental Health professionals.

The Environmental Health Practitioner Licensing Act (as amended) (225 ILCS 37) was extended at the end of 2018 for a ten year period and requires that anyone who conducts education, consultation, or enforcement activities in the areas of "... milk and food sanitation, protection and regulation of private water supplies, private waste water management, domestic solid waste disposal practices, institutional health and safety..." must be licensed (LEHP).

Obtaining Your License
Obtaining your license requires that you meet minimum qualifications, apply to sit for the exam, and take and pass the exam. To qualify for the exam, you must have:
• A bachelor’s degree with 30 hours of basic sciences.
• Twelve months full-time experience.

Applications must be submitted to and reviewed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.

As part of its commitment to the licensure of Environmental Health professionals in Illinois, IEHA offers an intensive, two and a half-day licensing exam review course from time to time. If you have questions about licensure or the review course please contact the IEHA Office.
